Make Contact

pencilBefore you contact the people you want on your team, you have some work to do.

To Do List

  1. Find answers to what people will want to know before they make up their minds to work with you.
    • What is the project about? What goal or result do you want?
    • Why have you invited that person or group? What skills or know-how or background do they have that is important to the project?
    • What good will come to team members (not just people with disabilities in general) if they work with you on this project?
    • What plans have already been made, and what plans will you make together?
    • How long do you think people will need to work with you (how many weeks or months, or how many meetings)?
    • What time of day are the meetings? How long will meetings be?
    • How will you support that person to take part?
    • Who else will be part of the group?
  2. Plan for the support that people will need in order to take part.
    • Find transportation support, such as
      • bus tickets
      • accessible bus (DATS) or taxi bookings
      • rides with other members
    • Make sure your meeting space works for everyone and has
      • good parking and bus service
      • accessible entrance, halls, meeting room and bathrooms
      • space to use and store mobility supports (such as wheelchairs, walkers and canes)
      • audio-visual aids (such as flip charts, lap-top computers with speech programs, LCD or overhead projectors)
    • Set up disability supports if needed, such as
      • people who can draw pictures to go with the words on flipcharts
      • signers or other language interpreters, Braille or big print on handouts
      • personal care attendants or support workers
    • Budget for food and drink for meetings. Provide a healthy meal if meetings are during meal-time. Plan to have coffee, tea and cold drinks at all meetings.
  3. Pick the best way to contact people (in person, phone, mail, e-mail, fax).
