Why Do It This Way?
People agree to work together if
- they share the same ideas about what is important, the same goals and the same interests
- they feel they have something useful to share
- they have the time to take part
- they have the support they need to take part
- they feel they will benefit from taking part
- they trust their partners on the project to listen and use their input
- they think the project will succeed [B4].
This is true whether you want people to come to a focus group meeting, or join a team or a committee.
People who are not often asked to join work groups may not think about all these things before they say "yes." Sometimes time, trust, a promise of support, and knowing that someone thinks they have something useful to say can be more important than knowing all about the issues.
Be clear. It is up to you to make sure they understand about the goals of the project and their work will be if they join, before they say "yes" or "no." If you do not, they may be upset and blame you if things do not turn out as they wished.
Once you have answers for everything on your To Do List, it is time to invite people to join your team. Every time you ask someone, it is different, because every team and project is different. The words you use to invite people also depend on how you invite them-by phone, by mail or e-mail or face-to-face.
