How many people do we need?

picture of tool or peopleYou need enough people to get the work done, but no more.

How many people you need depends on how you will work together and what needs to be done. Organizations sometimes want advice on their goals or plans. A lot of people care and are affected by what they do. So they need to consult with many people. One way to do this is focus groups. The best size for focus groups is 6 - 10 people [B9]. You may invite a big group and then divide them into smaller groups. Each small group will have its own note-taker.

The best size for a project team depends on the project. For simple projects, a team of 3 - 5 people may be all you need. For bigger or more difficult projects, a team of 6 - 10 is better. Some projects are so big that they need 10 - 15 people [B9]. But these projects often break up into smaller work teams to get the job done. Remember, the more people who have to meet together, the harder it is to find a time that works for everyone.
